Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae considered one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world. It contains high-quality proteins, essential amino acids, vitamins (such as B12), and numerous minerals. Due to its high antioxidant content, spirulina supports the immune system and protects cells from oxidative stress. It is often consumed in powder or tablet form and is particularly popular among vegans. Spirulina was originally used as an energy source by the Aztecs.
5 facts about Spirulina:
Spirulina is about 60–70% protein – more than any meat product.
It contains iron in a particularly bioavailable form.
Spirulina has a natural chlorophyll content, which can have a detoxifying effect.
It is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an anti-inflammatory fatty acid.
Spirulina is grown in freshwater tanks under controlled conditions.
Fun fact:
Spirulina was part of the diet on a NASA space mission in 1988 – because it is so nutrient-dense and space-saving!
